Debbie Nathan co-hosted a workshop on “How to boost your career in IR” at the London based, Kepler Cheuvreux IR Summit 2024, alongside Ariane Rühl-Daguisé , Founder & Executive Coach, Columbia Executive Coaching.
After introducing herself and DNA to the audience, Debbie talked through the current IR job market including:
- 2024 seen many companies go private or consolidate
- Lack of volume in the IPO market
- How changes on the sellside is increasing supply of candidates into IR
The discussion then led on to what next after IR and we talked through how a change in company, sector, different listing exchange, or private to public can feel like a big shift in role.
- Emergence of more IR in private markets – fundamental skills are the same. Could involve more fundraising and less regulation/no disclosure rules.
- If someone wanted to move on after IR, then a strategy or corporate development role, Chief of Staff or CFO role are popular options
During the final part of the workshop, Debbie shared tips for enhancing your job search and boosting your career in IR:
- Networking and LinkedIn are of paramount importance
- Always think what is your USP in this competitive market
- Ensure the role is interesting and CV enhancing – lots of corporate activity, change of management often brings change of strategy, entering new markets – all this adds to your bank of experience and makes you more attractive for other roles
- The broader your experience, the better.
